Thoughts...?

I don't know that I have formed an opinion about his death yet. I guess I'm just waiting for details to emerge. Or maybe I'm waiting to see The Dark Knight to see whether Ledger's death was a tragic blow to the thespian world or a round of thank God he's gone applause to the comic book geeks of the universe.

Either way, it's sad that a young man (Hey, he's younger than me) has lost his life so early. I believe he left behind a 2 year old daughter. Now that I'm a father, one of my recurring nightmares is that I'll get hit by a runaway caribou or something and leave my children without a father at a young age. So my heart goes out to his daughter (especially since she's gonna grow up and discover that her daddy played a gay cowboy in a very believable and graphic manner)

You know, there's a concern on WB's part about continuing the viral campaign for the movie now that he's died. My wife and I were talking about this and I think we agree that the campaign should continue as it's based on the character of the Joker and not the person Heath Ledger. Yes, the character is insane and murderously so, but he's a fictional character. Obviously being concerned about somehow 'profaning' (my word) the actor's memory with a bloody and violent campaign should worry the studio as they may kill their movie by forging ahead.

But dammit, America needs to grow up and realize the difference between 'real' and the so-called 'reality' of celebrity gossip. I know way too much about Britney's troubles and I don't watch any of the damn shows that thrive on such fodder. It might be in poor taste, but that's the Joker, isn't it? There's not one thing, NOT. ONE. THING. that's tasteful about that character.

All that said, you want an indication of how stupid America is? "Keith Ledger" was being searched as much as "Heath Ledger" this morning. We can't even get his name right.

I think he could have been a really top-notch actor and am looking very much forward to his performance in The Dark Knight. His turn in Monster's Ball was shocking and poignant (the movie was otherwise ugly and pointless no matter how you look at it) and he did a fine, fine job in Brokeback Mountain. It's sad when talent goes away, and sadder still when it happens like this.

Heath Ledger was a talent I enjoyed watching. I'm sad I won't get to see any more of his work.
