Feature Essay

I may regret this, but this here is the 'secret surprise' I promised last week. Since we're not assembling tonight, it's finally finished and now, without any further ado, here it is:

Please be kind...

I've been somewhat busy, so I haven't had a chance until now (now being 12:35am) to devote my time to this. But I watched the whole thing and am ready to comment!

Taken as a whole, I like it. Oh, I could quibble about some parts, like I thought that you should have panned out instead of in on the shoes at the beginning and you are right in that the sound quality is a bit off, but overall, this "feature" works on several levels.

First, it's something new and different. Sure, you could have written it up for the anthology and it would have been received well, I think, but to take the time to add visuals takes what could have been just another feature and turns into a nice little slice o' life visual discourse.

Two, it's obvious that you are very passionate about the exploring the visual side of PL in all it's myriad forms. In fact, I'd go so far as to say you're something of a trailblazer. I'm not sure that we are all as tech savvy as you are, but with the proper coaching (and software) there is no reason why something like this visual feature couldn't be the first of many from our group. My reservations about expanding into a digital medium are definintely assuaged after watching this feature. When the day comes that we take PL digital, you will deserve a pat on the back for being the first to push us there. Nice job.

Thanks, Travis!

Yeah, there are more than a few 'technical' problems with this piece, and thanks for understanding that. When I said 'half-assed', I was referring to my own efforts, which to this point, have been rather rushed and mostly last-minute. This one wasn't that so much as just poorly planned. Learned a lot from it, trust me. The next one will be better.

Also, here's the link to Richard Kadrey's Dispatches from Probability Beach: http://probabilitybeach.blogspot.com/ if you want to check it out. He's a sci-fi writer and Metrophage might be his best known work, I suppose. Here's the Wikipedia link, too if you want more about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Kadrey

So, thanks again for the comment. I'm glad you liked it. How about the immediacy of the MC and my response?

that's the nice thing about having an online site to leave comments and such...you can post something and get a reply almost instantaneously (you weren't waiting in the wings to see what someone wrote, were you?)

No, man, I just hadn't checked since I posted and had the chance when I got up this morning. Although NOW I might be checking more often.

But probably not until this afternoon. It's right around 930 CDT as I post this...

From wherever the hell I am.

I like your documentary, Jason. You obviously put a lot of effort into it.

Your discussion of your shoes reminds me of Steve Martin's Cruel Shoes.
