The wife and I are heading to San Francisco for a little get-away. Any advice? Where to go? Where not to go? Should we rent a car? Cab it everywhere? The Rock? Chinatown? Fisherman's Wharf? Haight-Ashbury? The new X-Men headquarters?
I have spent a lot of time in San Francisco. There's a TON to do, just depends on what you like doing. My best suggestion is to start by hitting up www.yelp.com There are tons of reviews for food places, museums, rental places, hotels, etc.
DEFINITELY do the trolley that goes from downtown to the wharf. It's a lot of fun and very beautiful on a sunny afternoon. If you like modern art, try the Museum of Modern Art (SF MOMA) which is also downtown. There's lots of shops at the Pier/Wharf/Embarcadero and you're right on the water.
My best suggestion is to do as much as you can during the week to avoid the crowds.
